SMOCKED SPRING FLOWERS DRESS--Did you know smocking was originally developed to create early thermal underwear for fishermen somewhere in the British Isles? Then women got creative with the designs and began to use it on childrens' clothes. Most people call it ''English Smocking'' but I'm not really sure where in the area it started. Maybe Ireland?

This is a lovely little dress. It was made specially to fit the 18" American Girl dolls. It will be fine for Bitty Baby, too! A great style for Maryellen because homemade clothes and smocking were very popular in the 1950's.

In back is a big sash bow tacked to one side of the middle hoop-and-loop closure so it won't need to be tied all the time (which really causes a problem for some children because it is so hard for them to tie the bow. NOT a problem with this dress!)
