This set is made with loving attention to detail. The neckline gathers with its ribbon tie and has gathered lace edging (so it is gathered twice when you tie the neck). The same lace decorates the sleeve edges which have elastic gathers to make it easier for the girl. The cap is lovely with gathered back (elastic at neckline edge and a nice ruffle all around the outer edge of the long flaps (called lappets) and a ribbons to tie under the chin.

In colonial times, the night "shift" was worn under the day dress so it acted like a blouse, a nightgown and a slip.
