CARPET BAG or TAPESTRY PURSE--It's interesting how some things are not remembered with good feelings throughout history. It was quite common for people in the 18th and 19th centuries to fold up a little rug, stitch the sides together, and use it as a sturdy bag to carry their belongings with them when they moved long distances. That's why this item is appropriate for Kirsten. A Swedish family moving to American may have brought ''carpet bags'' with them. However, later that century, after the Civil War, ''Carpet Baggers'' became common in the American South. These were people who came for business reasons--and they were often not perfectly honest in their dealings with Southerners. So this item got a ''bad connotation'' in history.

It may have also been used by any other character from the 18th or 19th centuries: Felicity, Elizabeth, Caroline, Kirsten, Addy--even Kaya because the Native American people used bags, too, and they imitated the settlers in lots of ways.

This little tapestry bag will be just perfect for Felicity or Elizabeth to keep knitting in. Most women had ongoing knitting projects because, since time is money and many people had lots of time but little cash, it was by far cheaper to learn to make whatever she could for the household and family members. Imagine knowing how to knit a pair of socks from the fiber in the field! It had to be cleaned, carded(smoothed), spun into thread, then wound into balls and knitted. It makes me feel lazy whenever I think of all women used to do. There were no days off; if they wanted to eat or be warm next winter there was lots to get done today!

Pretty reproduction of a knitting projects bag for your doll. Dimensions: 4 inches wide x 4 inches tall x about 1/2 inch thick. Pattern varies a little because they are all cut from different places on the tapestry fabric.
