I am a strong believer that dolls are DOING toys. Girls need things to DO with their dolls. Otherwise, they will just sit on the shelf or in the closet. Doll play is good for girls because it teaches them to put the focus on the needs of someone else, teaching them to care about others. Another thing dolls do for children is they have a chance to re-live the good and the bad things that happen in their lives, so they have the chance to figure out how to handle all sorts of situations.
