The body of the violin is made of hard plastic that is marbled so it looks like it was made from burlwood (wood with a fancy grain pattern). Very shiny. The strings are metal, as is the string on the bow (did you know that real violin bows have horse hair for strings?) The RECORD PLAYER has a music box built inside. Turn the brass key on the bottom of the real wood case and the record will TURN as it plays! This is the Felicity brass chamberstick that was sold by Pleasant Company, the American Girls Collection, before the days of Mattel. This item is no longer sold by Mattel. It is no longer made. You get a BRAND NEW solid brass chamberstick plus my own translucent "candle" with this purchase. My apologies that the candle is not in the photo.
I never recommend allowing a child to even pretend with a real piece of candle. It is too much of a temptation and could invite a terrible emergency.
